The tech entrepreneur tried to take control of OpenAI in 2018, only to be rejected by Sam Altman and the other founders. Musk then publicly reduced his donation claim to $50 million, and a report has now revealed that only around $15 million can be traced back to Musk.

OpenAI is a San Francisco-based AI research laboratory co-founded by Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, Elon Musk, and others in 2015. The organization conducts research into artificial intelligence with the purpose of entering a future of extremely capable, safe, artificially intelligent agents. Microsoft later invested around $1 billion in OpenAI.
