Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and OpenAI have received demands from the Italian data protection agency for the upcoming release of the AI-powered chatbot technology, ChatGPT. As per the agency’s instructions, OpenAI must fulfill the requirements set out by the agency by April 30, or else the service will remain unavailable in Italy.
OpenAI, the tech giant backed by Microsoft, had to take its AI-powered chatbot technology offline and face investigation after the Italian authority called ‘Garante’ raised suspicions of a breach in privacy rules. Italy is not the only country to have banned the use of the chatbot, as previously China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia have all prohibited the usage as well.
OpenAI has been open to collaborating with the Garante and has made a statement welcoming their effort to make the ChatGPT service accessible to the Italian users. The technology of the AI-powered chatbot has been praised and admired by many billionaires, including Bill Gates. On the other hand, Steve Wozniak and Elon Musk have signed an open letter, asking for the immediate pause of AI trials which they consider to be more powerful than GPT-4.
