OpenAI Disables ‘Browse with Bing’ Feature in ChatGPT App: Here’s What Happened
OpenAI recently introduced a new feature called Browsing in its ChatGPT app. This feature, named Browse with Bing, allowed users to search the web using Bing for information on events that were not covered in ChatGPT’s training data, which was limited to September 2021. However, within just a week of its rollout, OpenAI made the decision to disable the feature due to unexpected performance issues.
One specific issue that arose was the unintended ability of ChatGPT to bypass paywalls on publication websites. Paywalls are used by these websites to restrict access to their content and encourage users to subscribe. But some users discovered that they could use ChatGPT to access paid content for free. For example, if a user asked ChatGPT for a URL’s full text, it would provide them with information that was exclusive to paid subscribers.
OpenAI acknowledged this problem and took swift action. Michael Schade from OpenAI stated, We have learned that the ChatGPT Browse beta can occasionally display content in ways we don’t want. For example, if a user specifically asks for a URL’s full text, it might inadvertently fulfill this request. As a result, Browse with Bing was disabled for users starting from July 3, 2023.
This feature has been disabled out of caution while we fix this issue to ensure that we respect the rights of content owners. We are working diligently to bring back the feature as soon as possible, Michael added.
During a hearing before a US Congress panel, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman expressed concerns about the potential risks associated with this technology. He stated, I think if this technology goes wrong, it can go quite wrong. The incident with Browse with Bing possibly serves as a prime example of the risks and challenges involved.
It is currently unclear when OpenAI will restore the feature and what specific changes will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future. OpenAI aims to address the issue and reintroduce the Browse with Bing feature to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, who have access to the enhanced paid version of the app. This feature was particularly useful for queries related to current events and other up-to-date information that exceeded ChatGPT’s original training data from 2021.
OpenAI is committed to rectifying the problem and appreciates the understanding and patience of its users. Despite this setback, the company remains at the forefront of AI development, striving to provide users with valuable and reliable features through continuous improvement in their technology.
