Hackers are using a new weapon to infiltrate Facebook, and it’s called ChatGPT decoys. This sophisticated malware is able to access user data, including two-factor authentication codes. In March 2021, Facebook’s security team tracked down and stopped over a thousand malicious links shared through Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp due to these decoys.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, discovered ten malware families that utilize ChatGPT decoys to distribute malware to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp since March. DuckTail is one of the most dangerous varieties of this malware, as it can steal cookies from browser activities and also hijack sessions on Facebook to gain information like account details, locations, and codes for two-factor authentication. What’s more, hackers are also able to take control of any related Facebook Business account the victim has access to. Meta has taken action against this threat, sending a cease and desist order to the perpetrators and alerting law enforcement.
Recently, NodeStealer malware has been on the rise and targets Windows-based web browsers. It is designed to gain unauthorized access to Facebook, Gmail, and Microsoft Outlook accounts by stealing their cookies and login details. Facebook is proactively tackling this issue with new features including a support tool and account security controls created specifically for business users. Furthermore, plans are underway to launch Facebook at Work accounts later this year. This will allow business users to access Business Manager without a personal account, helping to prevent attacks from taking advantage of compromised personal profiles.
