NATO Pledges Support to Ukraine, Enhances Air Defense and Safeguards Energy Infrastructure
In a significant show of solidarity, NATO has reaffirmed its commitment to Ukraine by providing support to strengthen its air defense capabilities and protect its energy infrastructure. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg assured Ukraine that it would become a member of the trans-Atlantic military alliance. Stoltenberg’s remarks were made during his meeting with Ukraine’s war-time President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.
During their discussion, President Zelensky emphasized the urgent need to enhance Ukraine’s air defense to counter Russian aggression and safeguard its citizens from further harm. Stressing that NATO is a de facto ally, Zelensky expressed his gratitude for the alliance’s unwavering support. Zelensky also highlighted the damage caused by Russian attacks on Ukraine’s power plants and energy infrastructure, and emphasized the importance of additional air support to protect these vital facilities.
Stoltenberg affirmed NATO’s commitment to Ukraine’s defense by disclosing that the alliance has already secured contracts worth £2.08 billion for ammunition supply to Ukraine. The contracts include provisions for Howitzer shells, anti-tank guided missiles, and tank ammunition. Stoltenberg maintained that a stronger Ukraine would bring an end to Russia’s aggression, while also urging Russia to cease its hostilities, reminding that Ukraine has no option to surrender as it would only lead to brutal Russian occupation.
In a separate meeting between President Zelensky and France’s Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu, the supply of weapons to Ukraine was discussed. Minister Lecornu brought along a delegation of 20 representatives from French defense contractors specializing in various military technologies, including drones, robots, artillery, ammunition, artificial intelligence, and cybertechnology.
The intensified support from NATO and France comes at a crucial time for Ukraine as it continues to face relentless drone, missile, and artillery attacks, often targeting residential areas.
