Elon Musk, the outgoing Twitter CEO, had reportedly pledged to donate $100 million to the ChatGPT developer, OpenAI. However, recent reports show that only around $15 million of this amount could be traced back to the Tesla CEO. The investigations further point out that the only confirmed donation given by Musk to OpenAI is a sum of $10 million his foundation had made in 2016.
Sam Altman and the other founders of OpenAI refused Musk’s proposal to take control of the non-profit in 2018 when he reneged on his plan to contribute an additional $1 billion. When questioned on his donation claims, Musk vaguely mentioned that the figure is around $50 million, even though he previously declared that it was $100 million.
The documents filed to the IRS and state regulators indicate that besides the $10 million donation coming from his foundation, Musk could’ve made a maximum of $5 million to OpenAI in 2017. However, techCrunch’s investigations only trace back $15 million, which further diminishes the certainty of Musk’s huge promise of $100 million.
