On Tuesday, Chinese Nobel Prize winner Mo Yan turned to the help of ChatGPT for help in crafting a prize citation for fellow Chinese author, Yu Hua. Mo shared his long-standing friendship with Yu during an award ceremony and recalled the many stories they had experienced over the years. Mo related how he had tried for several days to write the prize citation without success, thus he asked a PhD student to employ ChatGPT to write the citation instead. After inputting the keywords, the chatbot generated a 1000+ word citation written in a Shakespearean style.
Yu Hua, the recipient of this prize, is the author of two renowned pieces of modern Chinese literature and most recently gained recognition for his 2021 novel The Lost City (Wen Cheng). His first two works, To Live and Brothers, have become very well-known and praised.
