In a groundbreaking move within the gaming industry, about 600 quality assurance (QA) workers at Activision, a division of Microsoft Gaming, have formed the largest gaming union in North America. This union, named Activision Quality Assurance United – CWA, was established with support from the Communication Workers of America (CWA) and includes employees from California, Minnesota, and Texas, who work on popular franchises like Call of Duty.
Microsoft’s neutral stance towards unionization played a crucial role in this development, following an extensive deal made in 2022 during its acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $69 billion. This approach, characterized by a commitment to neutrality and non-interference in union activities, has allowed over 1,000 QA workers to unionize under Microsoft, including existing unions at Raven Software, Blizzard Albany, and ZeniMax Media.
The formation of this union marks a significant milestone for the gaming industry, as it demonstrates a collaborative and constructive approach between workers and management. By voluntarily recognizing the union, Microsoft has shown its dedication to fostering a fair and inclusive work environment. This positive step forward comes at a time when thousands of workers across various gaming companies have faced layoffs, making the unity and solidarity of these QA workers even more resonant in the industry.
Through the establishment of Activision Quality Assurance United – CWA, these workers have paved the way for other teams within Microsoft-owned gaming divisions and beyond to consider unionization. The success of this union serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for workers in the gaming industry, emphasizing the importance of collective bargaining and solidarity in promoting fair labor practices and ensuring the well-being of employees.
