MI5, the British intelligence agency, has revealed that it is utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) tools to decode online videos and identify potential terrorist threats. Ken McCallum, the director general of MI5, disclosed that they have developed their own AI technology to sift through videos being watched by suspects in order to determine whether individuals on the path to violent radicalization pose a risk. This advanced technology also helps detect violence in images, sparing staff from having to personally view videos depicting acts of beheading and torture.
Speaking to students at Glasgow University about the vital role of math and data science in ensuring national security, McCallum emphasized the transformative power of AI in shaping our world. He explained that understanding whether individuals who actively contribute to extreme right-wing online forums are also consuming graphic beheading videos enables a more accurate assessment of the level of risk they might pose.
In addition to analyzing online videos, MI5 is integrating AI technology into the analysis of intercepted conversations. McCallum highlighted the agency’s need to make sense of vast amounts of audio data to uncover the intentions and plans of both spies and terrorists. He expressed MI5’s desire to automate this process as much as possible, moving away from the labor-intensive task of experts manually examining audio recordings.
McCallum, who studied mathematics at Glasgow University himself, encouraged fellow graduates with an interest in defense, security, and AI to consider a career with MI5. However, he also advised them that the reality of being a spy is far removed from the glamorous portrayals in movies, humorously stating that James Bond is 94.83 percent fiction.
