Meta, the parent company of Facebook, recently announced a significant expansion of its policies to tackle deceptive content, particularly in preparation for the upcoming US elections. Starting in May, Meta will introduce Made with AI labels for any AI-generated videos, images, and audio shared on its platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Additionally, Meta will implement distinct and more noticeable labels for digitally altered media that present a high risk of misleading the public. The decision was prompted by feedback from Meta’s oversight board, which deemed the existing rules on manipulated media as too narrow. The board recommended a more broad yet less restrictive approach to combatting manipulated content, especially videos altered without the use of AI. Monika Bickert, Vice President of Content Policy at Meta, highlighted the importance of transparency and context in addressing manipulated media. These changes are the result of consultations with experts, the public, and the oversight board.
Concerns have been raised over the role of AI technologies in online discourse, particularly during election periods. As political campaigns increasingly utilize AI tools, platforms like Meta are under pressure to effectively regulate deceptive content. The decision to update its policy also reflected the outcome of a global consultation process that involved over 23,000 respondents from 13 countries, the majority of whom supported warning labels on AI-generated content.
The revised policy will uphold community standards, removing content violating guidelines on voter interference, harassment, violence, and incitement. Fact-checking processes will continue to identify and reduce false or altered content. Meta aims to strike a balance between freedom of expression and protecting users from harmful misinformation by providing them with more information about the content’s origins and nature.
