Several technology company executives including Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms, and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, expressed their support for government oversight of artificial intelligence during discussions with European Commission Thierry Breton. They agreed on the European Union’s risk-based approach to regulation of artificial intelligence and other measures such as watermarking. Altman added that he appreciated the EU’s foresight in taking the issue seriously and looked forward to working with the European institution to offer a European service in compliance with the market. Meta’s President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, said that his company shared support for the objectives of the AI Pact. The discussions were part of Breton’s tour this week of technology companies and after his visit to Meta, Breton said that the owner of Facebook and Instagram appears to be well-prepared to meet Europe’s new strict content moderation rules and Meta has roughly 1,000 people working on Digital Services Act implementation. Additionally, Breton discussed artificial intelligence with Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, the world’s most valuable chipmaker, which leads the market in supplying processors for AI and Huang said that it was extremely likely that Nvidia would invest in Europe.
