Mecca’s Vegetation Cover Soars 600% in 5 Months, Thanks to Record Rainfall
Mecca, a significant region in Saudi Arabia, has experienced a remarkable surge in vegetation cover over the past five months, with a staggering 600% increase attributed to record-breaking rainfall. The Saudi National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification recently reported this astonishing phenomenon, highlighting the positive impact of the rainy conditions on the region’s vegetation.
During the period from August to December 2023, Mecca witnessed rainfall levels reaching up to 200 mm in certain areas. This abundant precipitation played a vital role in boosting the vegetation cover, leading to an extensive transformation in the landscape. Through a detailed analysis of remote sensing data, experts calculated that the initial vegetation cover area in Mecca in August measured 3,529.4 square kilometers, equivalent to 2.3% of the region’s total area.
As the rainfall persisted in the subsequent months, the vegetation coverage steadily expanded, exceeding all expectations. By the end of the year, Mecca’s vegetation covered an impressive 26,256 square kilometers, representing a significant growth in the region’s greenery. This expansion meant that vegetation now extended across 17.1% of the total area of the Mecca region, with the mountainous and highland regions along the Red Sea coast experiencing the greatest benefits.
Governorates including Mecca, Taif, Al Laith, Al Jumum, Al Kamil, and Khulais saw substantial improvements in vegetation cover due to their elevations ranging from 500 to 2,600 meters. These areas were ideal for the growth of various plants and witnessed the most significant increase in greenery. The National Center, responsible for monitoring vegetation cover areas and conducting studies, ensured the success of tree-planting initiatives and the Saudi Green initiative by employing advanced technologies such as remote sensing and artificial intelligence. These innovative tools allowed them to track land cover alterations, measure rainfall levels, and assess plant health.
The surge in vegetation cover in Mecca signifies a substantial step forward in combating desertification and promoting sustainable development in Saudi Arabia.
