The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in Machine Learning for trustworthy AI. The position is a one-year appointment with a possibility of renewal up to one additional year, subject to budget approval, and will focus on evaluating and testing AI/ML and Deep Learning-based algorithms to identify model weaknesses and improvements. The successful candidate will work with Professor Taufiquar Khan and Charlotte’s banking industry to ensure that AI/ML applications are robust, reliable, resilient, and free from bias.
The successful candidate is expected to have a background in statistical and deterministic machine learning, model risk validation, and uncertainty quantification. The aim of the post-doctoral fellowship is to prepare the appointee for research careers in the industry or careers involving industrial interactions in the academy. The postdoc will be expected to spend half of their time on industry applications of trustworthy AI and half on their research. Postdocs will receive guidance and opportunities for collaboration with their industry mentor.
The School of Data Science is an interdisciplinary unit governed by five colleges, offering a BS and two MS degrees with another BS and a PhD in development. The School teaches and researches methods to apply statistics and computer science to areas of passion of the students and faculty, varying from the ethical use of data, to communication studies, business, healthcare, political science, transportation, engineering, and more.
For financial reasons, AI/ML-based algorithms need to be deployed and be able to withstand adverse environments, Khan said. This fellowship fills a crucial gap in the research on AI/ML applications where we identify what works and what does not work, from unbiased, robust, and transparent methods. It’s a great opportunity to make a practical and immediate contribution.
The appointee must have received a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate, such as Sc.D. or M.D., within the last eight years. They will work under the supervision of a mentor, who will impart the realities and variety of scientific careers, and will encourage experiences outside the laboratory to broaden postdocs’ aspirations. The role of the postdoctoral fellow is characterized by several conditions, including a temporary appointment that involves substantially full-time research or scholarship, viewed as preparatory for a full-time academic and/or research career.
