ChatGPT has revolutionized the way students learn and has proliferated the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the educational sector. Jun Wei, a lecturer at PSB Academy in Singapore, has explored the potential of using AI-enabled applications such as ChatGPT in the classroom.
He notes that educators should take precautions to ensure that students are not exploiting AI-powered applications such as ChatGPT to plagiarize or cheat. He recommends establishing ground rules for using the app, asking students to cite their sources, and citing to establish the credibility of the information.
In addition, he suggests educators making learning fun by engaging students in active, participatory, and collaborative conversations. Rather than conventional tests, he suggests teachers go for supervised tests, take-home tasks with rigid grading schemes. Oral exams can also be implemented to replace written tests.
Samsung recently released a ban on ChatGPT and AI chatbots after a data leak blunder surfaced. There are a plethora of courses available that explore the use of AI and chatbots, one of the most popular being offered by Mashable SEA where users can learn how to use AI-driven applications and how to program chatbots.
Interestingly, a lucky Singaporean won the TOTO Lottery with the help of ChatGPT, highlighting the potential of the AI-driven app. Jun Wei firmly believes that ChatGPT is just another tool that prepares students for the world ahead. As the use of AI grows more common, its prudent for educators to find ways for their students to make the best of this technology without compromising their grades.
