Lawyer Utilizes ChatGPT to File ‘Fake’ Court Cases

Date:

A New York lawyer has been forced to admit to using an artificial intelligence tool called ChatGPT to conduct legal research after it referenced several made-up court cases. Steven Schwartz, who works at the firm Levidow, Levidow, and Oberman, is part of a team representing airline passenger Roberto Mata who is suing the firm Avianca for injuries suffered when a serving cart hit his knee during a flight from El Salvador to JFK airport in New York in 2019.

In order to supplement his research for a 10-page submission to the Manhattan federal court outlining why his client’s case should not be thrown out, Schwartz used the AI program. The legal brief, which was submitted in March, cited six previous cases from between 1999 and 2019, along with some fabricated ones, to back his argument.

Avianca is an airline company based in Colombia that provides both domestic and international flights. Founded in 1919, the company is the second-largest airline in Latin America, with more than 100 years of aviation experience and a wide network of destinations all over the world. For many years, Avianca has provided safe and welcoming air travel to millions of customers in Latin America and globally.

Steven Schwartz is a prominent lawyer from New York who joined Levidow, Levidow and Oberman in 2007. With more than a decade of legal experience, he is a highly respected attorney and carries out research that is both well-executed and thorough. He is currently leading the team representing Roberto Mata in his case against Avianca.
