Saudi Arabia Launches 5.9 GHz Bandwidth for V2X Technology to Revolutionize Intelligent Transportation
In a significant move to advance intelligent transportation systems, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has unveiled plans to introduce the 5.9 gigahertz bandwidth for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology. The Saudi Communication, Space, and Technology Commission (CST) announced this initiative to prepare for the rapid development of the intelligent transportation sector, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The introduction of the 5.9 GHz bandwidth is expected to cater to the requirements of autonomous vehicles, which are set to become a common sight on the roads in the near future. This latest initiative aims to enhance road safety, improve the quality of life in the Kingdom, and provide drivers with crucial real-time data.
V2X technology relies on sensors, cameras, and wireless connectivity, enabling car drivers to communicate with fellow drivers, pedestrians, and even traffic lights. By facilitating seamless communication between vehicles and their surroundings, this technology has the potential to revolutionize the way transportation systems operate.
As part of the plan, the Commission will extensively examine V2X applications, various types of communication, and significant developments in this field. Moreover, it will review the existing regulatory practices in different countries, taking into consideration feedback from public consultations.
To further bolster the telecommunications infrastructure, the CST has also announced that the Kingdom will host the fifth frequency spectrum auction on October 16. This auction will provide the International Mobile Telecommunications with access to the 600, 700, and 3800 megahertz bands.
Saudi Arabia has been actively investing in modern transportation systems and is aligned with the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics. In line with this strategy, the Ministry of Transport and Logistics had previously announced the trial of an autonomous vehicle to support their goals. This initiative by the Ministry aims to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities related to transportation, enhance mobility within cities, and minimize the environmental impact of the transport sector.
The implementation of V2X technology and the introduction of the 5.9 GHz bandwidth align with Saudi Arabia’s vision to create a technologically advanced and sustainable transportation network. By embracing the use of artificial intelligence and cutting-edge communication systems, the Kingdom is paving the way for a safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation ecosystem.
With these new developments, Saudi Arabia is poised to play a leading role in the intelligent transportation sector, embracing the potential benefits of V2X technology and contributing to the global efforts in revolutionizing the future of transportation.
