Italy Enhances Data Security with a Reintroduced ChatGPT

Date:

ChatGPT, the celebrated language model created by OpenAI, is back in service in Italy with refreshed security measures and data security regulations. This follows criticisms of the untrusted data privacy of its users. The chatbot service launched in the year 2022, however, Italy temporarily prohibited its use last month due to potential privacy violations.

In response, OpenAI has worked hard to review its practices and implement new privacy disclosures and controls. Users are now able to read explanations on how their data is collected, stored and used, as well as having the option to control the way their data is shared.

The data privacy request also included geo-blocking users with Italian IP addresses and this was promptly enacted by OpenAI. Later, the Garante asked for the ban to be lifted and upon agreeing to the suggested adjustments, permission was given and the service resumed in Italy. In addition, individuals were able to make requests for OpenAI to prevent its language model from using the data of Europeans for training purposes.

OpenAI expressed their joy to be able to resume services but also acknowledged their commitment to safeguard the privacy of their customers by releasing a press statement. In it, they stated that they took the raised concerns over data security extremely seriously and worked to establish new controls and disclosures to guarantee higher transparency and control.

The news of OpenAI’s move has been met with appreciation by privacy activists who have applauded the organization’s strategical and efficient measure. Even though there has been criticism of OpenAI not fully resolving the problem of data privacy, the company is commended for its steps towards data protection within the tech industry.
