Introducing Magi: Google’s Response to Bing and ChatGPT

Date:

Google has been hard at work lately to bring its users the best experience in terms of search engine usability. After OpenAI launched its chatbot, ChatGPT, a surprise to Google, Microsoft followed with Bing with ChatGPT – a search chatbot powered by GPT-4. Trying to keep up, Google responded to ChatGPT by introducing its own AI-powered search tool, Bard. However, it is still not up to par when compared to their competitors.

In a news report by The New York Times, it has been said that Google is now creating Magi, an AI-powered search engine, in order to compete with both ChatGPT and Bing. As the saying goes, Magi plans to be “a far more personalized experience” for consumers. It would be able to build up user data to suggest related items and give supplementary research findings. Google is said to also be focusing on making Magi more conversational, as Bing with ChatGPT already has a footing in the race. Magi is reportedly separate from Bard, but could likely contain similar features, making room for the two AI-powered programs to coexist.

This development comes on the heels of Samsung possibly defaulting from Google to Bing as their search engine of choice. This has placed a heavy demand on Google to evolve and keep up with their tech competition, resulting in the creation of Magi. However, Google is said to be struggling with monetizing their AI-powered search engine while trying to keep the user experience on a more traditional page, as neither ChatGPT nor Bing has advertisements. They are looking to placing ads in search results that could potentially lead to a purchase.

At the moment, more than 160 people are reportedly working on Google’s project, Magi. It is expected that features of Magi AI will incorporate themselves into the current version of Google Search and will be unveiled in the 2023 Google I/O Conference. It is up to Google to make sure Magi is up to date with the current AI competition as well as uphold their search engine quality and value for their users.

Google is a well-known internet technology company that specializes in providing advanced web-based services, online products, and cloud-based computing. Google provides hundreds of services and it is said to be the most visited website across the globe.

The report from The New York Times claims Open AI’s CTO, Greg Brockman, is leading the Magi project. Brockman is a computer science and machine learning specialist and was named one of the “The 35 Innovators Under 35” by MIT Technology Review in 2017. He has also been the CTO of Stripe, a technology company that builds economic infrastructure for the internet. He was co-founder and CTO of open source tools’ provider, hint.io in the summer of 2018, which has since been rebranded to Segment. Brockman is seen as an expert in the field of Artificial Intelligence and is leading the project on Magi to meet the needs of Google’s ever-growing consumer base.
