InfluxData Launches InfluxDB 3.0 Time Series Analytics Product Suite

Date:

InfluxData is introducing an update to its InfluxDB time series database with version 3.0. This version includes a rewrite of the database with a new programming language, the Rust programming language, as well as an Apache Arrow DataFusion SQL query engine. The new version aims to boost performance and capabilities to enable real time data analytics, a key feature in many industries.

The storage engine for InfluxDB 3.0 was formerly referred to as InfluxDB IOx and is written in the open source Rust programming language. Utilizing Rust and Apache Arrow, InfluxDB 3.0 is able to handle ‘infinite cardinality’ with its data columns, allowing unlimited numbers of unique values to be stored. In addition, the new version uses an open source Apache Parquet file format, which makes it easier to integrate with data lake systems.

According to Paul Dix, co-founder and CTO of InfluxData, the rewrite of the database has been an effort that has been two and a half years in the making. He notes that Rust is a powerful programming language for writing multi-threaded server-based applications, making it well-suited for this type of database.

InfluxData was founded in 2012 and provides an open-source based time series database, written in the Go programming language. A time series database keeps track of data and any changes made over a period of time and is used across a range of industries, including finance, healthcare, IOT, and automotive.

Paul Dix is a founding member of InfluxData and was part of the team that wrote the first versions of the InfluxDB database. As the CTO, Dix is passionate about the growth of time series databases and building an open source based product. He believes that this major update to the InfluxDB will enable more organizations to analyze their data in real time and take appropriate actions to leverage that data.
