For the first time in its 76th Army Day Parade, the Indian Army will be deploying artificial intelligence (AI) technology to assess the drill performance of its marching contingent. This move aims to eliminate human interference and ensure unbiased judgment in determining the best marching contingent. The AI system, developed by Sahana Systems based in Ahmedabad, will use AI-enabled cameras placed around the parade ground to capture the movement of all marching contingents. The software will assess the drill performance using pre-fed parameters, negating any possibility of human error.
This introduction of AI technology has been tested in the previous three practice drills, including on January 11. On the morning of January 15, the parade will take place at the 11 GRRC Thakur Sheodatt Singh parade ground, with participation from six marching contingents, including the 50 (I) PARA Brigade, SIKH LIGHT Infantry Regiment Centre, JAT Regiment Centre, Garhwal Rifle Regiment Centre, Bengal Engineer Group Centre, and Army Air Defence Centre. Additionally, there will be five regimental brass bands and five regimental pipe bands showcasing their talent.
Major General Salil Seth, GOC, Madhya Uttar Pradesh Sub Area (MUPSA), highlighted that organizing major events such as the Army Day parade in different parts of the country, as directed by the government, increases awareness among citizens and motivates more youth to join the armed forces. The Army Day parade is observed annually on January 15 to commemorate the day when General KM Cariappa took command of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Roy Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief, in 1947.
The Army Day Parade will consist of various exciting demonstrations, including a fly-past of microlights and helicopters. The Army Adventure Node of Agra will display Paramotors, while Para Commandos of the 50 (I) Para Brigade will perform a Combat Free Fall. Motorcycle riders from the Signal Corps will showcase their skills, and multiple weapon systems from the Indian Army’s inventory will be displayed on the parade ground.
The introduction of AI technology in the Army Day Parade signifies a significant step towards modernization and efficiency in the Indian Army. By utilizing AI to assess the drill performance, the army ensures a fair and unbiased judgment while enhancing precision. This technological advancement will further inspire and attract more young individuals to join the armed forces and serve the country proudly.
