Human Responsibility in Real-Life AI-Assisted Decisions
In a new study conducted by researchers from the Chair of Philosophy of Mind, it has been revealed that even when humans view AI-based assistants as mere tools, they still attribute partial responsibility to them for decisions made. This raises important questions about who is accountable in real-life scenarios where AI assistants provide supportive information. The team, led by Louis Longin, aimed to investigate how people assess responsibility in these cases.
The study focused on determining how participants judged the responsibility of a human driver using various types of AI-powered assistants compared to a non-AI navigation instrument. The participants, numbering 940, were presented with scenarios involving a smart AI-powered verbal assistant, a smart AI-powered tactile assistant, and a non-AI navigation tool. They were then asked to assess the level of responsibility they attributed to the navigation aids and whether they perceived them as tools.
One of the key findings was the ambivalence participants displayed in their views. While they strongly regarded smart assistants as tools, they also assigned them partial responsibility for the success or failure of the human drivers. Interestingly, this division of responsibility did not occur for the non-AI navigation instrument. The study also revealed that participants considered smart assistants more accountable for positive outcomes compared to negative ones. This suggests that people may apply different moral standards when assigning praise and blame, being more lenient when no harm occurs.
Dr. Bahador Bahrami, an expert on collective responsibility, further elucidated on this finding, suggesting that relaxed standards make it easier for individuals to credit non-human systems for averting potential crashes and avoiding harm.
The study’s results highlight the complex role that smart assistants play in our lives. Despite being seen as tools, they are also perceived as exerting an influence on decision-making and outcomes. The findings challenge conventional notions of responsibility, particularly in situations where humans are still ultimately making the final decisions but rely on AI as a sophisticated instrument.
