How ChatGPT’s Lack of Intelligence May Bring Major Problems for OpenAI

Date:

The race for the top spot in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot industry is heating up, with OpenAI and various competitors vying for dominance. However, the incredibly expensive cost of running chatbots could spell trouble for the future of this market. Every time a user asks a chatbot something, it costs the company running it money. The future of generative AI is uncertain, as companies are competing to keep costs down while attracting new users, who in turn cost even more to service. The Washington Post reports that even with subscription-based models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT Pro plan, chatbots are still expensive to run, with users limited to only 25 messages every three hours. This poses a challenging problem for AI companies as supplies of graphics processing units (GPUs) dwindle, making GPUs harder to acquire than drugs. Even large tech players such as Google are scaling down their operations by focusing on smaller language models. As costs continue to rise, it remains unclear what the future holds for the AI chatbot industry. Nonetheless, even with its high costs, chatbots still offer a less expensive alternative to human labor.
