Honor, a Chinese smartphone maker, has unveiled its upcoming flagship device, the Honor Magic 6, during the Qualcomm Summit. The smartphone will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip and is expected to be launched by the end of 2023. The integration of the new chipset will bring enhanced AI capabilities to the Magic 6, allowing users to access generative AI even without an internet connection.
One of the standout features of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset is its ability to support on-device large language models (LLMs), similar to the technology used in generative AI platforms like ChatGPT. Honor has confirmed that the Magic 6’s LLM will be different from cloud-based LLMs, which are trained on publicly accessible datasets. The device’s LLM will leverage its understanding of the user’s preferences to deliver personalized services.
During the Qualcomm event, Honor demonstrated some of the AI capabilities that will be available on the Magic 6. The smartphone will feature a dedicated virtual assistant named Yoyo, capable of creating short videos using photos and footage stored on the device. Additionally, Honor teased a new feature called Magic Capsule, which bears a resemblance to Apple’s Dynamic Island on the iPhone. However, the Magic Capsule on the Honor phone will also support eye-tracking, providing a unique user experience.
Honor is not the only brand planning to launch flagship smartphones with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. Xiaomi, Oppo, and OnePlus are also expected to introduce their high-end devices featuring the new Qualcomm chipset. However, these companies will need to collaborate with Qualcomm to integrate AI features into their smartphones, as the flagship models do not inherently support such capabilities.
Earlier this month, Google unveiled its Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones, equipped with various AI features to enhance photography, answer phone calls, and create custom wallpapers.
As the launch of the Honor Magic 6 draws near, smartphone enthusiasts can anticipate a device that offers cutting-edge AI capabilities, personalized services, and innovative features like the Magic Capsule with eye-tracking support. With multiple brands adopting the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, it is evident that AI-powered smartphones are paving the way for a more intelligent and interactive mobile experience.
