The Centre is gearing up to introduce a new Digital India Bill during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. The main objective behind this legislation is to combat the spread of AI-generated deepfake videos and to explore more effective ways to utilize technology while addressing the challenges posed by deep fakes and AI-generated content.
According to sources, the Digital India Bill will focus on developing legal frameworks to regulate videos on various online platforms like YouTube and social media. The government is also looking to establish a cross-party consensus on the Bill before its introduction in Parliament.
Virag Gupta, a lawyer and cyber expert, emphasized the importance of implementing rules related to the Data Protection Law to govern the AI industry, which often relies on unauthorized use of private and government data. He also stressed the need for tech giants and social media platforms to comply with IT intermediary rules and appoint grievance officers to address complaints related to deepfakes.
Gupta highlighted the significance of holding companies accountable for data breaches, hacks, and privacy violations under the new data protection law and the IT Act. He underscored the necessity of enacting comprehensive laws on AI, data protection, and internet governance to address emerging issues in sectors like e-commerce, fintech, and online gaming.
The upcoming Digital India Act is expected to play a crucial role in safeguarding individuals’ privacy and combating the proliferation of deepfake videos and AI-generated content online. With the government’s focus on formulating robust legal frameworks and regulations, the Digital India Bill is poised to shape the future of technology governance in the country.
