Google Ends Development of Large Silicon Valley Campus Amidst Difficult Economic Times: Report

Date:

Google has suspended its plans to build a giant campus in San Jose, California amid the challenging economic realities of the world. This huge and ambitious project was to include office space, housing units, and public parks, though construction was originally slated to start by the end of the year.

The news comes after parent company Alphabet already announced that 12,000 jobs are to be cut across the world, as the company anticipates further tough economic times. This move is further being accompanied by the same sort of hiring spree that other companies are going through, as the pandemic has forced many people to stay inside and work, study, and entertain themselves online.

Alphabet’s revenues and profits had been impacted greatly in the final three months of 2020, making things even harder for the company financially. Now, Google faces more intense competition with the introduction of Microsoft-backed ChatGPT AI chatbot, as they are letting people in both the US and the UK test it out.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, spoke recently about the possibility of a second wave of layoffs for tech giant Google with nearly 450 Indian employees that were impacted by the first one.

Alphabet Inc. is the second-largest technology company in the world after Apple, and was created as the parent company for Google and several other subsidiaries. It is based in **Mountain View, California**, and specializes in internet-related services and products. Sundar Pichai is an Indian American business executive and an engineer who is the current CEO of Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google. He took the post back in 2019, when Google and Alphabet were restructured and became two distinct companies. Pichai’s salary recently increased to a whopping $226 million in 2022, despite the cost cutting measures of Alphabet.
