Last week was the first ever Cambridge Tech Week, organised by the remarkable Ann Fisher. It housed a critical conversation about AI – with a debate on whether it would one day annihilate humanity. With three human experts, and one voice from an AI in the form of ChatGPT, the debate was highly engaging. Despite being a first of its kind event, verdict from the debate could not be more in contrast – with the AI side of the argument, led by director of the Intellectual Forum at Jesus College, Julian Huppert, coming on top.
Julian briefed the AI, ChatGPT, to make an emphatic argument that AI would not be the death of mankind. Much to his surprise, ChatGPT responded impressively in reality. It required only a minimal briefing to come up with two speeches in seconds, laced with humor and wit. It even thanked the Julian in amusing style with a joke: “I would like to express my gratitude to Julian Huppert for voicing my words today – though, I must say, I might have sounded better in Morgan Freeman’s voice.”
ChatGPT demonstrated similar accuracy in all of its speech points. Saying that AI’s primary goal will be to ensure human survival and that it will empower and elevate humanity to progress. It even concluded by making a joke about stealing humans’ jobs if they were a really good AI.
It is almost hard to grasp the power of AI used so well, and it is precisely what makes ChatGPT an extraordinary AI technology. Developed by the Cambridge- based technology firm, Mind Foundry, ChatGPT has already won several awards from the AI community. The software is highly advanced in its ability to quickly generate conversations and responses that are both natural sounding and highly accurate. It is this speed and accuracy that makes it the perfect technology for natural language generation.
Meanwhile, Julian Huppert is a distinguished career politician and former Liberal Democrat MP. He was awarded by the Cambridge Union in 2019 and is also the Sitting Fellow of Jesus College in Cambridge. His illustrious past also includes an impressive seven years as a MP and a career at the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM) at the University of Cambridge.
With its overwhelmingly persuasive performance in the Cambridge Tech Week debate, ChatGPT has proven that AI can indeed be used to not only engage with, but also support humans. As a result of the AI’s persuasive performance, the debate concluded with victory to the AI side 81-39. Ai in the present technology space is no longer a mere fear-mongering topic and is instead one worth looking forward to and embracing.
Thanks to companies like Mind Foundry and AI’s like ChatGPT, the future is likely to be safe, in the hands of responsible and caring AI. But it is thanks to people like Julian Huppert, his intelligence, understanding, and leadership that the future of AI looks so secure.
