After slamming OpenAI’s ChatGPT, tech mogul Elon Musk is focused on developing an alternative with the aim of preventing the destruction of humanity. Dubbed “TruthGPT”, this ChatGPT alternative will be a machine learning technology that searches for the maximum truth. In an interview with Fox News, Musk said this approach could be the best way to mitigate against any danger AI poses to humanity. On Twitter, Musk has already referred to this project as “TruthGPT”.
To further this goal, Musk has launched X.AI, a company registered in Nevada and Texas. Musk himself is its only listed director, while Jared Birchall – the director of Musk’s family office – is the business’ secretary. X.AI is set to jump into the ever-growing ChatGPT market, an industry which recently saw a surge in demand for ChatGPT and GPT-4.
To express concern about this development, a group of top entrepreneurs and AI researchers, including Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, wrote an open letter urging AI labs to pause research of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for a period of six months.
While the prospect of an AI system that either preserves or destroys humanity is a contentious issue, X.AI’s mission is to promote artificial intelligence with the intent of preventing any long-lasting harm to humans. It will be fascinating to see the progress of the project, and how the public responds if and when “TruthGPT” succeeds in living up to its own name.
