Tech entrepreneur and famed founder of companies including Tesla, SpaceX and OpenAI, Elon Musk is reportedly developing plans to establish an artificial intelligence (AI) startup. Musk is beginning to assemble a team of engineers, researchers and investors for the venture, according to the Financial Times. The AI startup will be a direct rival to OpenAI, a popular generative AI provider which was one of Musk’s original projects in 2015.
Musk has been in talks with existing investors of his other companies, Tesla and SpaceX, looking for potential investments in the new AI venture. Furthermore, Musk recently filed a company named X.AI, which he is sole director of, and changed the name of his Twiiter account to X.Corp as part of his plans to build an ‘everything app’ under the ‘X’ brand.
The emerging news of this new AI venture follows reports that Musk purchased nearly 10,000 graphics processing units for Twitter’s AI-related projects in April. The same month saw Musk join over 2,600 tech leaders and researchers in an open letter calling for a pause on further AI development, due to the ‘profound risks to society and humanity’ it could bring.
Amazon Web Services is yet another firm that has jumped on the AI bandwagon. The platform AWS users will be able to access ‘Amazon Bedrock’, which provides the capability for the development generative AI from foundational models.
OpenAI, the company Musk founded, remains one of the most advanced AI research laboratories, claiming to have progressed more rapidly than expected. Founded in late 2015, the firm works to build large-scale artificial general intelligence (AGI), and is broadly recognized as a world-leading AI technology developer.
