Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and former CEO of Twitter, has plans to launch an AI company, according to the Financial Times. He is reported to be in process of bringing together a team of AI researchers, engineers and is in talks with several investors regarding the project. Records of a Nevada business have shown that on 9th March a company called X.AI was incorporated, with Musk being its sole director.
This move signals a rapid change of direction, as Musk only a few weeks ago had demanded a pause in AI research by signing a letter with 1,800 other people. As of recently, Musk has changed the name of Twitter to X Corp. as part of his plans to make an “everything app” branded “X”. His eclectic portfolio of companies include Twitter, Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company.
The new AI company is likely to enable Musk to attempt to compete with OpenAI, which he co-founded only to leave the board not long after, reportedly due to conflicts with management, including the ones over AI safety. OpenAI is the creator of ChatGPT and has already secured a $1bn investment from Microsoft. Musk has expressed concerns about the capability of models such as GPT-4, the latest release by OpenAI, to spread false information and demonstrate political bias. Reportedly, high-powered GPU processors have been purchased and engineers were recruited from leading AI labs like DeepMind.
The company Elon Musk is creating is OpenAI, founded in 2015 with the aim of advancing digital intelligence for the benefit of humanity. OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research laboratory and invests in research, engineering, and education with the intent of benefiting the public. They work with a wide range of AI technologies, from generative adversarial networks and natural language processing to generative models and deep reinforcement learning, and apply these to solve global problems like climate change and pandemics. OpenAI is based in San Francisco, California and helped pioneer AI safety research, which has been in the spotlight for years due to rise of the technology. With Elon Musk looking to take OpenAI on head to head, the competition will clearly be heated.
