Disney’s Haunted Mansion reboot premiered at Disneyland in California, but several of the film’s stars decided to skip the event in solidarity with the ongoing actors’ strike. The strike, led by SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists), is a response to concerns that artificial intelligence (AI) may soon replace human actors. This marks the first time since 1960 that both the writers’ union and the actors’ union have simultaneously gone on strike.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the red carpet event was not devoid of star power. Instead of the film’s actors, Disney invited its theme park actors to strut their stuff on the red carpet. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Maleficent, the Evil Queen from Snow White, and Cruella de Vil were among the characters who posed for photos with fans for approximately two hours. Additionally, some lucky guests and influencers had the chance to experience Disneyland’s new Haunted Mansion attraction at the premiere.
While the main stars of the film were absent, director Justin Simien and a few producers did make an appearance halfway through the event. Simien admitted to feeling conflicted but ultimately decided to attend in order to honor Katie Dippold, the film’s screenwriter. If they can’t be here to speak for it, I felt like I had to be here to speak for it, Simien told The Hollywood Reporter. He further expressed support for SAG-AFTRA’s concerns about AI in Hollywood, calling it an important issue that needs to be addressed.
It is worth noting that the Directors Guild of America, which represents directors in the industry, is not currently on strike but has shown solidarity with SAG-AFTRA. They expressed disappointment with the lack of progress made in negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
At the time of reporting, Disney had not provided any comment in response to Insider’s request.
In conclusion, Disney’s Haunted Mansion premiere saw the absence of its stars due to the ongoing actors’ strike. Theme park actors took center stage on the red carpet, posing with fans and creating an engaging atmosphere. Director Justin Simien attended the event, acknowledging the importance of SAG-AFTRA’s concerns about AI in the industry. The Directors Guild of America also expressed support for SAG-AFTRA’s cause.
