A vast majority of businesses that pay up after a ransomware attack, don’t get their data back, as per the recently released report from Rubrik’s Zero Labs. This survey pooled responses from more than 1,600 IT and security leaders, finding only 16% of global organizations managed to recover all of their data after giving into the ransom demand. A concerning 72% of organizations reported paying their attackers a sum of money in return for their decryptor, and yet most of those companies met a wall of silence.
The ransomware threat is one of the most notoriously serious cyberattacks nowadays, as malicious players take hold of sensitive data and encrypt it, before issuing a demand for a cryptocurrency payment (often in Monero, as it is hard to trace). If the demand is not met, the stolen data will be released on the dark web. This tactic is especially powerful if a business lacks a backup and recovery system, as is the case for 99% of all external companies, according to the report.
Unfortunately, the backups themselves are often targeted by the malicious actors, with 73% of those organizations partially successful in corrupting the data. Numerous cybersecurity and law enforcement professionals should be taken as cautionary reminders against paying any demands, as doing so doesn’t guarantee the files’ return and merely rewards the criminals. It can even prompt further attacks from other actors.
