DEWA Launches Second Nanosatellite: DEWA SAT-2 Latest News Update

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has come out with a definite success, with the successful launch of their second nanosatellite, DEWA SAT-2. This new nanosatellite was launched aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenberg Space Force Base located in California, USA. This launch is a strong testament to DEWA’s leadership in the space technology domain, facilitating them to enhance their daily operations, maintenance and planning of various electricity and water related networks.

The DEWA SAT-2 is a 6U nanosatellite, equipped with a high resolution camera that has a 4.7 metre imaging capability. With this, the satellite will be used for different Earth observation missions. Moreover, this high-resolution camera of the satellite can also provide continuous line-scan imaging in seven different spectral bands from around 500km up in the orbit. Additionally, the nanosatellite is also designed with an infrared feature to measure certain greenhouse gases.

The MD and CEO of DEWA, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, has stated that DEWA is strongly devoted to using the latest Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and blockchain for properly exchange information between the satellite communications and Earth observation related technologies. He has also added that the ‘Space-D’ programme of DEWA, launched in January 2021 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, has the primary goal of improving the operations and maintenance as well as planning of much needed electricity and water networks.

The DEWA organisation also focuses to educate their young Emirati staffs on the use of accurate space technologies related to electricity and water networks. This launch of DEWA SAT-2 confirms the progress the company is making towards the usage of space-based technologies in the enhancement of efficiency while providing customers with top notch services regarding availability, reliability, quality and efficiency.
