The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu, is calling on media practitioners in Nigeria to partner with the government to promote the development of the South East and the nation as a whole. During a meeting with members of the Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (OMPAN) in Umuahia, Kalu emphasized the crucial role that journalists play in society as watchdogs and urged them to provide constructive criticism to ensure transparency and accountability in leadership.
Kalu highlighted the importance of selling Nigeria positively to the world and encouraged journalists to focus on promoting the good aspects of the country rather than constantly highlighting negative news. He emphasized the need for investigative journalism and research to provide accurate and well-informed information to the public.
Furthermore, Kalu expressed his desire to work closely with media practitioners to promote peace and unity in the South East region. He shared plans for the South East Development Bill, aimed at using federal funds to rebuild the area and heal the wounds caused by past conflicts. Kalu stressed the importance of advocating for peace in the region and urged journalists to support these efforts.
In closing, Kalu promised to support and partner with OMPAN and encouraged members to stay updated on new media trends to remain competitive in the industry. The Chairman of OMPAN, Chief Promise Uzoma Okoro, expressed gratitude for the meeting with the Deputy Speaker and pledged the association’s commitment to working together for the betterment of the South East and Nigeria as a whole.
