Delhi Police Seeks Meta’s Help to Track Account Sharing Deepfake Video of Actor Rashmika Mandanna
The Delhi Police have reached out to Meta, the parent company of Facebook, seeking assistance in identifying the account responsible for sharing a deepfake video featuring popular Indian actor Rashmika Mandanna. The move comes following the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) by the police in connection with the incident.
In their letter to Meta, the police have requested the URL of the account that shared the fabricated video. They have also requested information regarding the individuals who further disseminated the video on social media platforms. The police have filed the FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act that deal with forgery and harming reputation.
An official involved in the investigation stated that a dedicated team has been assigned to track down those involved in creating and sharing the deepfake video. The officer expressed optimism in cracking the case soon.
The Delhi Commission for Women has also taken note of the incident and issued a notice to the city police, urging action against the perpetrators.
The deepfake video, suspected to have been created using Artificial Intelligence technology, went viral on social media last week. The original video allegedly featured a British-Indian influencer, with Mandanna’s face digitally edited onto it.
