Delhi Police Seeks Meta’s Help to Identify Deep Fake Video of Actress Rashmika Mandanna
The Delhi Police has reached out to Meta, the parent company of Facebook, seeking assistance in identifying the account responsible for sharing a deep fake video featuring popular actress Rashmika Mandanna. The move comes after the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) related to the incident.
In their communication to Meta, the Delhi Police has requested the URL of the account that shared the fabricated video on social media. Additionally, they have also asked for information regarding the individuals who further spread the fake video through various platforms.
An officer involved in the investigation stated, We have written to Meta to access the URL ID of the account from which the video was generated. The FIR has been filed under sections 465 and 469 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertain to forgery, and sections 66C and 66E of the Information Technology Act, which address cybercrime offenses. The Special Cell’s Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations Unit of the Delhi Police is actively pursuing the case with a dedicated team of officers.
The Delhi Commission for Women has also taken notice of the video and has issued a notice to the city police, urging them to take appropriate action against the perpetrators. The deep fake video featuring Rashmika Mandanna, suspected to have been created using Artificial Intelligence, gained significant attention on social media last week. The original video belonged to a British-Indian influencer, whose face was digitally replaced with Mandanna’s.
Efforts are underway to trace those responsible for the creation and dissemination of the video.
