In the fast-growing AI landscape, it’s become increasingly difficult to decide which Large Language Model (LLM) is best suited for your needs. To provide some clarity on the matter, we put Alphabet’s Bard, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Meta’s LLaMa to the test.
When it comes to ease of use, both Google’s Bard and OpenAI’s ChatGPT require the user to create an account before being able to use the service. That said, it’s quite easy and free to create an account and get started, and answers to questions can be obtained quickly. For running LLaMa locally, however, you require some knowledge of working with AI models and must be able to follow a tutorial. Additionally, it would require significant storage space for this project.
Privacy was also taken into account when making a comparison, and it was found that both Google and OpenAI collect user data within their policies. This information can be stored in the user’s account and can last up to 18 months. It is important to note that to help with quality and improve products, human reviewers may read, annotate, and process the user’s conversations from both Bard and ChatGPT. When opting for a local model, this would not be the case as no account is required, but access to the model is more complicated.
In order to accurately assess the LLM’s knowledge, three questions were asked and the results differed between the models. ChatGPT confidently claimed that the national flag does not have five sides, while Bard correctly identified the flags of Nepal as having five sides. Regarding the technicality of wiring the BS 1363 electrical plug, Bard was able to label it as British-style, but none of the models could provide clear instructions on how to wire it up correctly. Finally, none of the models could go beyond a classic joke or an unoriginal one.
When it came to the coding task of building a basic calculator program, both Bard and ChatGPT instantly returned specified code but none of the code from the local model would run.
To conclude, it’s evident that none of the LLMs can come close to replicating the capabilities of an experienced professional. To create great AI art without having to worry about privacy issues, running a large language model on your local machine is encouraged. Additionally, if you’re looking for an easy-to-use and technology-ready LLM, Bard and ChatGPT are your best bet.
