College Student Achieves High Grade for Essay with ChatGPT Assistance

Date:

A recent report revealed a top grade awarded to a college student for an essay written with the help of AI chatbot ChatGPT. The student, identified as “Tom” to protect his privacy, earned a first – the highest grade he had ever been given – for the essay he wrote with the help of the AI chatbot. Tom revealed that, despite using the AI to generate essay content, he went ahead to tweak and adapt the content generated to his own liking.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot designed to generate well-structured essays. The AI is intended to assist students in writing research materials for their classes and was released November last year. The launch was followed by a surge in students who attempted to pass off the AI generated materials as their own work and whose universities have since incurred a token of backlash.

Cardiff University, the educational institute Tom is a student of, have thus since stated that such improper use of AI is prohibited and would be covered by the existing academic integrity policy. According to the report, the university has taken steps to sensitize its staff and students on the importance of maintaining academic integrity and has actively discouraged any attempt at academic misconduct as it comes in different forms.

OpenAI is a San Francisco-based research laboratory that specializes in artificial intelligence technology, it was founded by world known engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs including Y Combinator president Sam Altman, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Greg Brockman, and many others. OpenAI’s mission is to create safe, general artificial intelligence (AI) that is beneficial to humanity. The company creates technologies to help research technicians, engineers and scientists advance and enhance the world of AI research and development.
