Chinese Ambassador Urges Respect and Cooperation in US-China Relationship Amidst Growing Tensions
In a recent address to the annual gala of the National Committee on US-China Relations, China’s ambassador to the US, Xie Feng, emphasized the importance of respect and cooperation between the two countries. As tensions continue to rise, Xie stressed that a conflict between the powers should never be allowed, and the idea of decoupling the world’s largest economies will never work.
Xie acknowledged that the relationship between China and the US is facing challenges and described reversing the downward spiral as a shared wish. He emphasized that damaging the relationship would serve nobody’s interest. With next year marking the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, Xie called for finding a right way to get along.
Highlighting the significance of the US-China relationship, Xie predicted that it would continue to be the most important bilateral relationship in the world. He stressed that neither side can transform or displace the other and read out a letter from Chinese President Xi Jinping, expressing China’s readiness to work with the US.
President Xi’s letter called for mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation to address global challenges. Xie reiterated the three principles outlined by President Xi, with the most important being the respect for each other’s core interests. He emphasized that sensitive issues, including Taiwan, should be handled prudently in accordance with the one-China principle.
The event also saw the presence of former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger, who stressed the unique ability of both countries to bring peace and progress to the world. Kissinger warned against abandoning the one-China policy, urging the US to avoid giving the impression of walking away from it.
This address from Ambassador Xie comes at a time when US-China tensions remain considerably high, particularly regarding technology and investment restrictions imposed by the US. However, recent diplomatic engagements between the two countries provide hope for improved relations.
The Biden administration has been urged by Xie to take practical steps to repair the frayed relationship, emphasizing the need to overcome difficulties together through expanded areas of cooperation. In response, President Biden expressed the US commitment to managing the competition between both countries responsibly while advancing their mutual vision for a free, open, secure, and prosperous world. He also emphasized the US’s dedication to protecting international institutions and rules.
Despite the ongoing challenges, the Chinese ambassador’s address and recent diplomatic efforts represent a positive step towards better US-China relations. Maintaining respect, cooperation, and addressing differences in a prudent manner will be crucial in navigating this complex relationship and promoting global stability and prosperity.
