Romance is alive and well, and couples are turning to new AI-based tools to help craft their wedding vows. One such tool is ChatGPT, which was created by OpenAI, a Silicon Valley-based AI research firm. It offers people the promise of overcoming writer’s block and generating compelling written responses to prompt questions.
One couple, Elyse Nguyen and her husband, took the plunge and used ChatGPT to help write their wedding vows. Elyse, who works as a financial analyst at Qualcomm, found the AI chatbot humorous as it was able to produce alliteration, metaphors and analogies to make their vows more memorable. She ended up using a good portion of the suggestions ChatGPT gave and with the help, was able to take some of the stress off of writing her own vows.
Recent reports have revealed that more and more people are turning to ChatGPT for help with their wedding planning. For example, a startup product manager named Ellen Le used ChatGPT to write an ‘about us’ page for her website and compose directions from San Francisco to her Napa Valley wedding. The Writer’s Block Assistant tool on online wedding planning service Joy uses ChatGPT technology to craft vows and speeches, as well as create thank you cards and wedding website “about us” pages.
Joy co-founder and CEO Vishal Joshi said the company has already seen thousands of submissions since launching the tool. He believes that like the smartphone, if applied thoughtfully, the application of ChatGPT can have many positive impacts on people’s lives.
On the other hand, there have been some criticisms of ChatGPT. Worries have been articulated that it could perpetuate biases and spread misinformation. Furthermore, some have questioned if there’s something lost by injecting technology into such a personal and emotional moment such as a wedding.
For anesthesiologist Michael Grinn, his eventual embrace of ChatGPT for composing his Ketubah – a Jewish marriage contract – showed his and partner Kate Gardiner’s interest in the convenience the technology offered.
While the couple did make some edits and changes to the language in the contract, they also sought to write their own vows. Michael said he wanted something more personalized and emotional without any kind of help. Ultimately, Michael used ChatGPT to help compose the best man’s speech while focusing his own vows on being more personal and heartfelt.
ChatGPT has certainly changed the playing field when it comes to preparing for wedding ceremonies. From writing vows and speeches to setting up websites and creating religious marriage contracts, this AI chatbot is proving itself helpful and time-saving. For couples faced with the stress of wedding planning, it just may have become their new best friend.
