OpenAI’s recently released ChatGPT has caused a great stir and has many wondering if it will result in a job loss worldwide. ChatGPT and other AI chatbots have made jobs simpler, but they still have their limits. Journalism, design, and teaching are the three main careers that are more likely to be affected by ChatGPT.
Journalism is one of the careers that will be impacted by ChatGPT. Prof. Herman Wasserman, the Chair of the Department of Journalism at Stellenbosch University believes that AI is only useful in performing tasks which are repetitive. “When it comes to journalists, AI can be used to process information and data to create stories,” he said. However, AI can’t replace the skill of a journalist when it comes to fact-checking or investigations. It is the creativity, strategy, and uniqueness of a journalist that AI bots can’t replicate.
AI tools can also be useful to design experts, as they find solutions faster and simplify work. Robert Marufu, the Head of Design at Eclipse Communication, said that AI can assist by automating certain tasks, but it is the creative touch, strategy, and objectivity of a human that AI can’t provide.
Teachers worldwide have expressed fears that ChatGPT could threaten their jobs. However, retired Head of Bridge House School, Mike Russell believes that such advancements should be welcomed. He refers to ChatGPT as an “amazing and exciting tool” for teachers who would welcome the technology.
In conclusion, AI chatbots such as ChatGPT have their limits in certain professions and cannot completely replace humans just yet. AI can be beneficial in handling mundane tasks, but it cannot replicate the creativity and unique qualities that refined professionals bring to the table. OpenAI’s ChatGPT aims at providing users with more efficient solutions, and it will be interesting to see how AI further evolves and impacts jobs across various industries.
