Researchers have issued a warning regarding ChatGPT, the AI-powered chatbot. Since its launch in November, scammers are targeting users to benefit from the popularity by using domain names and wording that appear related to the site.
The research team at Palo Alto Unit 42 observed a 910% increase in monthly registrations for domains related to ChatGPT, and a 17,818% growth of related squatting domains from their DNS Security logs. Additionally, they identified up to 118 daily detections of ChatGPT-related malicious URLs.
OpenAI provides users with a free version of ChatGPT, however, this hasn’t stopped scammers from targeting people, claiming they have to pay for these services. They employ ChatGPT-related social engineering techniques to commit identity theft or financial fraud. These malicious sites falsely imitate the style of the official OpenAI website, luring victims into downloading malware or submitting sensitive information, such as credit card details and email addresses.
To stay safe online, users must always access ChatGPT via the official OpenAI website. They must be cautious when sharing confidential information, since it could be manipulated to provide deceptive or false information.
