Artificial intelligence-powered bot ChatGPT has gained a surprising new skill – officiating weddings. In a recent ceremony in Colorado, the bot, developed by AI research company OpenAI, took center stage to help a couple say their vows.
The wedding took place in the absence of a licensed marriage official, as the state of Colorado doesn’t require one for a ceremony. The groom, Deyton Truitt, described the day as monumental and explained that they were able to forgo an officiant as long as both partners agreed.
The idea of using an artificial officiant came from the bride’s father, Stephen Wiench, who saw it as an easier and more cost-effective solution. Initially, the bot was hesitant, saying it couldn’t perform the task without a body or the ability to physically show up. However, with the help of ChatGPT’s advanced capabilities, which allow for personalization, the couple was able to proceed.
Family members provided the bot with personal details, which it then incorporated into the ceremony. For example, it expressed gratitude to guests who had traveled from out of state, mentioning Kansas specifically. Amidst the blend of modern technology and a historic setting, the wedding took place in a charming church dating back to 1885.
The couple managed to plan their wedding in under a week and sent an AI-generated statement to their 30 guests once they decided to have the bot officiate. The statement, written by the bot, mentioned the significance of this historic moment and the limitless possibilities that arise when love and technology intersect, according to a local newspaper.
The role of ChatGPT in this wedding has certainly pushed the boundaries of what artificial intelligence can do. With its ability to craft personalized ceremonies and officiate weddings, it has opened up new possibilities for couples. As technology continues to advance, it will be interesting to see how AI further integrates with various aspects of our lives, including important milestones like weddings.
