OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence start-up, revealed a new feature on its blog on Tuesday that enables users to turn off their chat history. This new move by OpenAI is made in order to enhance privacy by ensuring the data provided by its users through ChatGPT will not be processed or used to improve its model. Instead, any information supplied in chat history will be stored in OpenAI’s system for 30 days before being erased.
Previously, the only way to disable data collection from the ChatGPT feature required users to complete a form mentioned in OpenAI’s privacy policy, making them unable to easily change their preferences. However, with the introduction of the new setting, users can quickly and easily adjust their settings without a hassle.
This step taken by OpenAI reflects the company’s commitment to security and privacy following a recent data breach when user information such as financial data was unintentionally shared with other users. Owing to this, Italy’s strict General Data Protection Regulations prohibits OpenAI’s ChatGPT feature, and a complaint was also filed to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). But with the release of the revised privacy setting, OpenAI has made sure it will continue to upgrade its precautionary measures as Artificial Intelligence advances.
To adjust their account settings, users can click their account name on ChatGPT and select “Settings”. Once they have clicked on the option, they will see a toggle labelled “Chat History & Training”. To switch it off, users can just tap the toggle.
OpenAI also announced the release of ChatGPT Business, a subscription tailored for professionals and large enterprises who need extra control over their data. With this feature, companies are better able to monitor their staff’s usage of the app and, in particular, allow them to prevent their data from being used to improve AI. This option will also be a relief for firms such as Samsung who had their employee unintentionally share private codes. The company has already declared its plans to roll out this subscription shortly.
Overall, with the implementation of the toggle and the forthcoming ChatGPT Business, OpenAI has proved its dedication to protecting user data and privacy. Through this feature, companies, as well as individual users, are able to ensure their data is protected on the app, and that their conversations remain private.
