ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) system with diverse capabilities. While it can do your homework or help you shape a better resume, you may be surprised to know that it can also create unique drink recipes. Caroline Mimbs Nyce of The Atlantic recently discovered the AI bot’s barista skills when it made an unusual mocktail. This indicates its potential to be used in the beverage industry, so it is worth exploring the application of AI in the food and beverage space.
In Nyce’s experiment, ChatGPT failed to assemble the desired grocery list. Then fellow writer, Derek Thompson suggested to request the AI bot to make cocktail recipes based on what was available in his pantry. The bot delivered with a seltzer and jalapeño mocktail. Further studies revealed the AI bot’s capability for creative synthesis, that is to take existing data, analyze them, and create something new.
While AI operates on a certain principle, it is still capable of producing rather unpredictable results. Stephen Wolfram suggested an internal randomness built in the ChatGPT software, and Daniel Rockmore, professor of computer science at Dartmouth College, praised ChatGPT for its capabilities outside exact processes. This was proven when Axerlad held an event called “Humans vs. Machines”, to test ChatGPT’s skills in mixing drinks. The bot created a Zelda-themed cocktail and it placed equal to the same drink made by a real life bartender.
ChatGPT shows potential in creating novel drinks but there still might be cons in using AI automation in beverage industry. Lui Fernandes adjusted their recipes after using ChatGPT and Caroline Mimbs Nyce created combinations that seem unpalatable.
The beverage industry is the latest to outsource AI services and apply them to their products and services. For example, Japanese beverage giant Sapporo has been developing an AI program to make unique drinks. It is apparent that ChatGPT and other bots such as these will be more widely used and it is important to explore the implications of AI and how it can be used in the future.
