Reece Wiench expressed the significance of their wedding day, calling it monumental. He shared that, according to their state’s laws, an officiant is not necessary as long as both partners agree. Inspired by his father-in-law, Stephen Wiench, the groom suggested using an artificial officiant, considering it an easier and more cost-effective option.
Initially, the chatbot seemed hesitant to perform the ceremony, expressing its limitations: Sorry, I can’t do this. I don’t have eyes, I don’t have a body, I can’t show up and officiate your wedding. However, the couple proceeded with their plan and informed guests via AI-generated messages that ChatGPT would be officiating their wedding.
