The CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman recently spoke at the US Senate Judiciary Committee about the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence. OpenAI is the company that developed ChatGPT and Altman warned the committee that AI technology can cause “significant harm” to humanity. He remarked that the development of AI is akin to the invention of the printing press and compared the situation to an arms race. Altman said his greatest fear is that “significant harm” can be caused by AI, urging the government to take steps to prevent such a scenario.
The inventor was also questioned on the dangers of AI chatbots, pointing out the potential of such technology to reshape history. Geoffrey Hinton, considered the “godfather of AI”, recently commented that AI posed a “more urgent” threat to humanity than climate change. Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak also co-signed an open letter warning of the implications of an unregulated AI arms race.
Altman admitted that some professions could be automated out of existence, but argued that new jobs would be created as technology advances. However, the industry consensus appears to be that AI could cause far more harm than good, especially if regulated by the ruling class. AI poses a worrying threat to humanity and the public should be wary of the potential risks.
