The new artificial intelligence service ChatGPT, which was recently lauded for its impressive GTP-4 version, offers a range of daily uses from finding information to summarizing books and details cooking recipes. However, its innovative capabilities come at an ecological cost, just like other technologies such as cryptocurrencies and NFTs.
French platform Greenly, which allows companies to estimate their CO2 emissions real-time, took a look at ChatGPT-3’s potential carbon footprint, finding it to stand at 240 tonnes of CO2e – the equivalent of 136 return flights between Paris and New York! Over 99% of the emissions were attributed to the AI’s learning systems, such as operating electricity, server manufacturing and expansion of the tool.
However, while ChatGPT-3 reaches the heights of its power and potential, climate expert Tommy Catherine raises the question of whether its environmental cost is worth it. With every advancement comes a heightened carbon emissions level, threatening the planet and impeding potential efforts to see a carbon-free future.
