Brigham Young University (BYU) has responded to the ongoing debate surrounding artificial intelligence by introducing a machine learning degree into its undergraduate program. Machine learning, a subfield of AI, is the technology used in ChatGPT, an advanced language model. Starting this fall, students at BYU will have the opportunity to major in machine learning.
Machine learning has been a focus of research by BYU’s computer science faculty and students for quite some time. Tony Martinez, a professor at BYU, has been working with machine learning for the past 35 years. The subject has also generated significant interest among students at the university.
Recognizing the importance of machine learning within the field of computer science, David Wingate, a computer science professor at BYU, believed it was necessary to establish a dedicated major. He stated, I think this degree will help focus and leverage faculty expertise for the benefit of the students.
The surge in popularity of technologies like ChatGPT has played a role in bringing the machine learning program to the forefront. Martinez highlights the growing significance of understanding the practical applications of machine learning in various industries. He said, I have a strong desire to prepare students better, both to get great jobs in machine learning, but also to contribute to the discussion that society is having about the role of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Martinez acknowledges the potential risks associated with machine learning if not properly regulated, such as the creation of more sophisticated fake news and the replacement of human jobs. These concerns will be addressed in machine learning courses, similar to how ethical considerations are already discussed in other computer science classes at BYU.
Wingate, however, remains optimistic about the future of AI. He believes that the course will equip students with the necessary skills to utilize machine learning in positive ways. I think the future is bright, he said. I think that machine learning has the potential to improve multiple aspects of society, and I think that by sort of training BYU students in machine learning…they could go off and they could use their skills and talents to make the world a better place.
By introducing a machine learning degree, BYU aims to prepare students for the evolving landscape of technology and contribute to the responsible development and utilization of AI. This move demonstrates the university’s commitment to empowering students to make a positive impact in a world shaped by artificial intelligence.
