Following the four year wait since its fifth season, the Netflix anthology series “Black Mirror” Season 6 is set to premiere in June 2021. It promises to be the most shocking season yet as it will push boundaries beyond what fans have come to expect from the show. Alongside the announcement, Netflix released the first teaser which featured a space station in orbit, a haunting smiley face emoji and a selection of gruesome visuals. An all-star cast, including Aaron Paul, Michael Cera, Salma Hayek Pinault and the others, will play out the sci-fi tech induced stories that explore the dark side of technological advances in society.
Creator Charlie Brooker has hinted that the season will challenge “some of [his] own core assumptions”, resulting in more variety and “crazy swings” than ever before. We can expect to be taken on captivating journeys to tackle social issues around cyber-attacks, identity theft, robotic animals and the toxicity of social media. Indeed, the show has been so successful at pushing the boundaries of what technology can do in our contemporary lives that many fans have coined the phrase “living in a ‘Black Mirror’ episode” to describe their current reality.
The delayed release of this season has come as a result of production companies buying and selling the rights to the show and, of course, the pandemic. Netflix recently signed a licensing deal with Banijay and confirmed that the season will have more episodes and longer runtimes than the previous one.
The series’ official Twitter account recently hinted at the return with the simple statement “what have we missed”. The anticipation is already reaching fever pitch, as Charlie Brooker himself can’t wait for viewers to get a hold of Season 6, promising it will be a thrilling adventure.
