Awareness of ChatGPT High Among Americans but Few Have Used It

Date:

A majority of Americans have heard of ChatGPT, a popular open-access online chatbot that has garnered significant attention since its public launch in late November 2022. Research conducted in March indicates that 58% of U.S. adults are familiar with ChatGPT, though only 14% have tried it themselves. Most of those who have tried ChatGPT found it to be at least somewhat useful.

There are notable differences among demographics when it comes to awareness of the chatbot. For example, a higher share of people with postgraduate degrees, individuals from more affluent households, and Asian adults are familiar with ChatGPT compared to those with less education or lower incomes. Similarly, more men than women and adults under 30 than those 30 and over have heard of the chatbot.

ChatGPT is used in many contexts, ranging from entertainment to educational enrichment to work productivity. Though there has been much debate as to its proper use, usage of this chatbot is still relatively low. Even with the majority of users who have said ChatGPT was at least somewhat useful, only 14% reported using it for any purpose, including entertainment, learning, or work.

The chatbot has come under criticism for failing to produce accurate responses, misattributing information, and accusing innocent people of crimes they have not committed. Yet among those who have used it, 39% report it has been somewhat useful and a third have found it to be extremely or very useful.

ChatGPT was created by U.S.-based Robotics company. Robotics is an AI-based application development company that has revolutionized the way online conversations are conducted.
